Selection Process

Selection for the 72nd CCE is a three-stage process:

  1. Preliminary Examination – A single objective-type General Studies paper of 150 marks, to be completed in 2 hours, with 1/3rd mark negative marking for each wrong answer. Minimum qualifying marks are 40% for unreserved candidates, 36.5% for Backward Class, 34% for Extremely Backward Class, and 32% for SC/ST, women and PwD candidates.
  2. Main (Written) Examination – Comprises a qualifying General Hindi paper (100 marks, minimum 30% required but not counted for merit), General Studies Paper I (300 marks), General Studies Paper II (300 marks), an Essay paper (300 marks), and one optional subject (300 marks, qualifying in nature). The 900 marks from General Studies I & II and the Essay paper count towards merit.
  3. Personality Test (Interview) – 120 marks. Only candidates who appear for the interview are included in the final merit list, which is prepared out of a combined 1020 marks (900 Mains + 120 Interview).
